Notes

Our example of the Rolex GMT Master II 16760 also known as the fat lady or Sophia Loren is presented in highly original condition, with thick lugs and case, and the dial has some patination which contrasts the aged lumes and hands. Amongst the best 16760s we have seen, this example has a R Serial dating it to 1987 and is fitted to an in period correct jubilee bracelet code 62510H with 50 ends and 502 end links. The jubilee bracelet has some stretch as to be expected but is presented in far better than average. The date has open 6 and open 9. This example has neither box nor papers. The Rolex 16760 is a transitional model and was the first GMT to have independently adjustable hour hands, allowing for swift changes of timezone. Produced between 1984 and 1989 the reference 16760 predates the more common 16710 and was sold simultaneous to the existing 16750 and then 16700 GMT Master.

History

Introduced in 1954 through a collaboration with Pan Am airways, the GMT Master was designed to measure two timezones. The red arrow hand indicates the second timezone which can be adjusted by rotating the bezel. In 1989 the GMT Master II was introduced with a quick set hour hand which could be adjusted as a timezone was crossed. The classic models were discontinued in 2007. Given the enormous length of the model’s history, this model has featured in many iconic films and on celebrities including: Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Honor Blackman (as Pussy Galore), Bruce Reynolds, Tom Selleck (as Magnum PI), Che Guevera, Jackie Stewart and many NASA astronauts
