Notes

This highly desirable Rolex GMT Master II is reference 16760 otherwise known as the "Fat Lady" given its augmented dimensions, both in case depth, bezel width and crown protectors. The Rolex 16760 is a transitional model and was the first GMT to have independently adjustable hour hands, allowing for swift changes of timezone. Produced between 1984 and 1989 the reference 16760 predates the more common 16710 and was sold simultaneous to the existing 16750 and then 16700 GMT Master . This particular GMT Master II comes as a complete set, with original box, outer box, papers (with 16760 sticker attached) as well as the sought after GMT Master II manual which features this reference. The condition is excellent with patina on the dial, indices and bezel, which is "Coke" coloured as was standard on the 16760 (and the only bezel insert officially supplied).

History

Introduced in 1954 through a collaboration with Pan Am airways, the GMT Master was designed to measure two timezones. The red arrow hand indicates the second timezone which can be adjusted by rotating the bezel. In 1989 the GMT Master II was introduced with a quick set hour hand which could be adjusted as a timezone was crossed. The classic models were discontinued in 2007. Given the enormous length of the model’s history, this model has featured in many iconic films and on celebrities including: Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Honor Blackman (as Pussy Galore), Bruce Reynolds, Tom Selleck (as Magnum PI), Che Guevera, Jackie Stewart and many NASA astronauts.
