Rolex GMT Master II 16710 “Bamford & Sons”

Our Rolex GMT Master II, reference 16710, is an early customisation by Bamford & Sons (now Bamford Watch Department). In 2006, a small number of Rolex watches were treated with a PVD black coating to the stainless steel case by George Bamford, who was seeking a more unique look to what was perceived as ubiquitous Rolex sports watches. The first Bamford Rolex have a dial signed "Bamford & Sons." and this is one of them. Fitted to its original Cordura leather backed nato style strap, signed "Bamford & sons", our example is presented in excellent condition with light signs of use but no degradation to the black steel. The strap has some signs of use. When delivered to their first owners, we understand that the Rolex paperwork and steel bracelet were not included, and this is the case with our example. An undated and redacted letter to the original owner from Bamford Watch Department (as the company is now know) is included, confirming that this is a Rolex watch customised by the firm. A presentation box will be included at point of sale along with a period magazine from 2006 (chrono) which features an article about Bamford customised Rolex watches when they were first released. Our example bears a F **** serial dating original production by Rolex to 2003/ 2004. Of note, Bamford was the first company to cover and customise Rolex with black, and this success and desirability has spawned a variety of different firms producing similar, including Titan Black, Prohunter and others. This however, is one of the originals, and offers long term collectability as an icon of its era, as well as everyday 'under the radar' versatility, for which it was first intended. Rolex GMT Masters are now widely sought after, and in addition to the fact this is a fabulous foundation for any customisation, this one is quite beautifully executed.
