Christmas Timings
Vintage & Prestige will be closed for the festive period from midday on Friday 22nd December 2023 until Wednesday 3rd January 2024 with the following office opening hours:
Wednesday 3rd January 2024: 11am - 4pm
Normal hours resume from Thursday 4th January.
Emails may be responded to remotely during the festive period but please allow longer than average delays.
Please note that to ensure delivery within the UK before Christmas, purchases must be completed by midday Thursday 21st December 2023. For overseas sendings, we recommend purchases be completed by midday Tuesday 19th December 2023. We cannot guarantee delivery before Christmas if a purchase is made after these times although every endeavour will be made to so do!
Purchases made between midday Thursday 21st December and Sunday 7th January may be shipped on Monday 8th January in accordance with our usual shipping standard.

Watches as an investment (part 3)
Rolex
A couple of years ago we wrote about the undervalued Rolex’s to collect (with an eye on the future value) which included the Air King and Explorer 2 amongst others. These two references have increased even beyond our anticipations, in the case of the latter, an increase that is virtually double 2018’s average listed price for pre-owned. The market in 2021 is very different, with every Rolex watch being in demand, a demand far exceeding supply in many cases. The reasons are varied.
A brief visit to a high street located Rolex authorised dealer in September 2021 may yield some surprises. There are only a few watches to be viewed in person, as production was interrupted through the international lockdowns, with demand from buyers increasing at the same time. Once upon a time, a choice of Rolex Datejust in steel, steel and gold (yellow or rose) would be on display along with one or two sports models and a smattering of gold Day-Dates. This is no longer the case, with some large dealers reporting total stock held of under ten Rolex items.
Whilst a logical approach may be that supply will increase, this won’t be the case, as Rolex hand makes watches, and would need to significantly change their manufacturing methodology. It would also be disingenuous to erode the hard won investment status of their range by over-supplying.
Just over a decade ago, the only watches that would need a registration or waiting list would be a Daytona or Submariner. Following the ceramic age, and the popularisation of collector nick names (Batman, Pepsi, Batgirl, Hulk, Starbucks, Camerons etc) which firmly planted the value and investment of Rolex in the mainstream, with examples trading privately and in pre-owned outlets such as our’s, at over the original window price. Discontinuation of references fuels the demand, as once they are ceased, the value will certainly rise, and perceived rarities, such as coloured dials on Oyster Perpetuals ignites further desire to acquire.
Traditionally, the vintage market would lead by investment potential, but with modern ‘classical’ references trading over list price, accordingly, all preowned values have increased. The adage, ‘the best time to buy a Rolex is when you can afford it’ never rang truer, and we cite some instantly recognisable references as one’s to consider today, to expect to see the value increase steadily over time:
The Rolex Datejust 36: vintage or neo-vintage, these can be found from under £5000 for a good one, and always the key to an earlier watch: condition. The case size appeals to both genders, giving a global resale audience ; when the time is right to move it on to its next custodian.
The Rolex Lady Datejust: for forty years, 26mm was the lady sized Rolex, although this is no longer the default choice, these are ideal daily wearers with elegance for any evening event. Currently pre-2004 (before the case/ bracelet change) can be acquired around £4000 for an excellent condition example, around £400 less than a new entry Oyster Perpetual (if you can find one / see above).
The Rolex Submariner (pre-ceramic): Instantly recognisable, the Sub, whether with Date or non Date, is the James Bond Rolex, and clearly age, completeness and condition will steer the pricing. We see these as undervalued today, given they were far more desirable than a GMT Master at one stage and are now trailing behind by a few £1000s. A gap that we feel will soon be narrower.
The Rolex Datejust 41: Larger, meaner and more obvious, it would be easy to dismiss the desirability of the stunning 41mm case as a trend, a fashion statement. Unlikely, given there are widely reported waiting lists for these over the past few months, we see the very slight increase over RRP (in the secondary market) worthwhile. It only takes a modest Rolex RRP price increase (usually annual) to eradicate the extra you’ve paid in the secondary market, and the subsequent rise when you resell.

A message regarding the outbreak of Covid-19, March 2020
The majority of our sales and purchasing is online and shipped, we continue our business almost as usual at Vintage & Prestige. We have robust and secure payment methods in place via vintageandprestige.com, using Barclaycard Merchant Services, PCI DSS Compliant. We take the safety and wellbeing of our customers, staff, partners and suppliers as our number one priority. Accordingly, all items are cleaned as part of our normal business practice and dispatch is managed professionally by our shipping agents, who are well rehearsed in global logistics. At the time of writing, we are experiencing no change to normal service but can foresee some potential delays in the future. We will do our best to minimise any disruption.
In response to developing government advice, and to further extend precaution, we will not be meeting by appointment for the time being, and events that we had planned to exhibit at, have been postponed. We will provide additional photos of our items as well as product video tours on request. We hope that this will assist with decision making. During this period, we will offer extended warranties on all purchases (in addition to our standard warranty) as well as other incentives to thank our customers for their ongoing support and business.
Our pre-owned product range, tangible and portable assets, continues to prove a safe investment. In this spirit, we are still looking to selectively acquire stock, commission sell and offer part exchange options.
We continue to monitor advice from our government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and we will take further measures as recommended.

Wimbledon and Watches | Tennis and Time
Since 1978, Rolex have been the official timekeeper at Wimbledon. Possibly the most associated sponsorship in sports, the Rolex crown and clocks have become so embedded in the tennis championship’s televised coverage, it would be hard to imagine the timekeeping replaced by another manufacturer.

Water resistant and durable, the gold Submariners exude practical glamour.
Take a simple Rolex Datejust in steel, and you are following in Roger Federer’s steps, as he was spotted with a Datejust II on many occasions, likely owning to his ambassadorship for Rolex. Upgrade to a vintage Daytona for the evening as he does.
Ignoring the Moon Watch, and opting for a special edition or limited production run, such as this Rattrapante, with split second timing, and you are master of the race track, or the school sports day. The carbon fibre dial looks superb au soleil.
Beach watches needn’t be limited to Casio or Swatch (As admittedly we recommend) . Picking a pre-owned Tag Heuer, such as this 2000 Exclusive with polished case and bracelet, and you have your mobile mirror to reflect the sun as well as a grey dive watch. One which, incidentally, is just at home in the evenings.
Take one vintage inspired dive watch, with modern day size, and you can evoke your own James Bond moment. This example is extremely keenly priced.

Vintage Omega Constellation
We don’t sell frankincense or myrrh but we do sell gold and with this vintage 1970s Omega Constellation you get a lot of gold. 143grams in total. The movement is chronometer certified and at the time it was sold new, it was the most expensive automatic Omega money could buy.
