Notes

Our very rare Rolex Daytona with Zenith movement, reference 16523, features a 40mm stainless steel/ yellow gold case and bracelet. Of note, the black dial features "four lines" aka "four liner" as the dial reads Rolex Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Cosmograph, omitting the "officially certified" on the later dials. We understand this dial rarity, also known as a mark 2 dial, also with inverted 6 and 200 graduated bezel was produced for only one year, 1989. The cost increment of the steel and gold version may suggest lower numbers than the steel version, as this was the first bi-metal Daytona (from 1988), powered by the El Primero derived movement. The other idiosyncrasy about the earliest Zenith Daytonas is the non flip lock clasp, produced 1988-1990, which this has. The overall condition of this example is superb, and certainly collection worthy, given the set included: inner and outer correct box, Your Rolex Oyster booklet, calendar 1988/9, translation document, red swing tag and original warranty papers punched and stamped, showing it was first retailed by a prestigious and long standing authorised Rolex dealer in Norway (CC corresponding) in December 1989. The L Serial also denotes production in 1989.
